This time of year many people are reminded of the true reason for the season and want to find ways to give back and help their communities. With current world circumstances, it can be a challenge to find meaningful ways to volunteer when traditional means are no longer an option. We've pulled together some great ideas to help you think outside the box this holiday season!
- Neighborhood food Drive
If you're a planner, start a neighborhood food drive to get your community in the spirit too! Reach out to your local food bank and ask for a list of most needed items. Print flyers and enlist a friend to help you pass them out. Ask your HOA or community center to add the flyer to the monthly newsletter to spread the word!
- Christmas Angel
Reach out to your local family homeless shelter and ask for a list of names and requested gifts. Make tags to pin to a Christmas tree in your community center or church. People can pick a tag and drop presents off to be wrapped and labelled in time to bring some holiday cheer to a family in need.
- Adopt A Grandparent
Depression due to isolation is rampant in retirement homes right now, especially with renewed visitor restrictions. Call up a home near you and ask if they have a pen pal program or Secret Santa program for their elderly residents. If they don't have one set up, ask how you can help. You might end up making a beloved new friend!
- Soup Kitchen
Thanksgiving is the busiest time of year for soup kitchens when it comes to volunteers. Many busier kitchens even have wait lists! Instead, ask how you can offer support leading up to Turkey Day or after. Soup kitchens need help all year long, not just on holidays, and don't restrict yourself to serving food! Use your gifts to give back!
- Coat Drive
Homeless persons often struggle to find adequate clothing, especially in harsher climates. Organize a coat or jacket drive and include mittens and hats too! If you usually host a big Christmas party, but can't this year, consider using some of those funds to help those in need!
