L-Leucine –
1st Essential amino acid for Bodybuilding
Have you ever heard of BCAA before?
Do you even know what BCAA stands for?
BCAA stands for “Branched Chain Amino Acids.”
Now you see why it's abbreviated almost everywhere you see it.
L-Leucine is one of the three essential BCAA's. The other two, I'll share next.
This essential amino acid is not produced by the body, in fact, it has to come from the foods you eat or from dietary supplements.
L-Leucine can be derived from nuts, brown rice, meat, dairy products, eggs, soy, and whole wheat products.
L-Leucine, among many other essential amino acids, are known for supporting muscle mass and supplying the body with energy when under stress.
This is why it is found in most supplement products for bodybuilders and athletes.
It's also know for helping with weight loss when participating in an exercise program or routine workouts.
Other benefits include;
- Improves exercise performance
- Builds Muscle Mass
- May increase muscle growth and lean body mass
- May increase production of human growth hormone (HGH)
- Can help control blood sugar helping to control insulin release & function
- May decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol)
Studies have shown that when L-Leucine was taken by aged rats, as a dietary supplement, it slowed the degradation of muscle tissue by increasing the synthesis of muscle proteins.
Although there are many benefits for athletes and bodybuilders from L-Leucine, in order to get optimal results, one must have two other essential BCAA's, L-Valine and L-Isoleucine.
The golden rule is;
You need two parts L-Leucine and two parts L-Valine for every one part of L-Isoleuchine.
Other than being beneficial for bodybuilders and athletes, it can help people with liver and kidney problems.
For people who suffer from liver or kidney disorders, L-Leucine supplements have been known to enhance liver protein synthesis and improve breathing ability and quality of sleep. (Ref)
Also, due from the fact that it may lower blood sugar levels, it can be beneficial for diabetics and controlling their insulin release.
#2
Isoleucine
2nd Essential amino acid, Increases Endurance
Isoleucine, one of the three essential BCAA's, is widely known for its ability to increase endurance and help heal muscle tissue.
Isoleucine is a very popular ingredient found in most all supplements for professional athletes and bodybuilders.
It has proven its ability to boost up energy levels and help with healing the body from intense workout training.
Where to get Isoleucine?
Because Isoleucine is an essential amino acid, it can't be produced by the body. It has to come from food products and dietary supplements.
It is found in proteins, much the same as L-Leucine, in whole wheat bread, nuts, eggs, brown rice, meat, and beans.
As with L-Leucine, it's not near as beneficial without also having the other two essential amino acids. Look as though it's a family.
Isoleucine, Leucine, and Valine are a family and make up the three branched-chain amino acids. One doesn't work without the other.
L-Leucine, Isoleucine, L-Valine make up about 70% of all the amino acids in the body's proteins, making them extremely valuable to the human body.
Isoleucine is known to help repair muscle tissue after an intense workout and even after an injury or surgery.
It is also known for maintaining normal blood glucose levels.
BCAAs are essential for body builders and athletes because they can reduce muscle loss and provide faster muscle recovery.
#3
L-Valine
3rd Essential amino acid – Promotes Cognitive Functioning
L-Valine, one of the essential BCAAs, aids in preventing the breakdown of muscle, promotes a healthy nervous system and cognitive functioning.
Because it is an amino acid, it can't be produced by the body.
L-Valine is found in kidney beans, poultry, milk, and leafy vegetables.
There are numerous beneficial qualities of L-Valine, that can help the body in ways such as these;
- Promotes healthy nervous system
- Supports cognitive functioning
- Improves insomnia
- May help with anxiety and nervousness
- Suppresses the appetite
- Regulates the immune system
- Repairs muscle tissue and helps metabolize muscle's
- Increases endurance
That list alone, shows why it's an important ingredient for bodybuilders and athletes.
In fact, if you are a bodybuilder, professional athlete, or someone who does intense training regularly, I would highly recommend that the supplements you choose contain the family branch of amino acids; L-Leucine, Isoleucine, & L-Valine.
#4
Taurine – “Conditional” amino acid
Boost Exercise and Endurance
Unlike, the 3 essential amino acids; L-Leucine, Isoleucine, and L-Valine, which cannot be produced by the body, Taurine is considered a conditional amino acid.
“Conditional,” meaning, it is different because the body can produce it.
Taurine is largely found in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets.
Taurine is often added to energy drinks because of its many benefits, including;
- Aids in maintaining proper hydration & electrolyte balance in the cells
- Promotes a healthy digestion
- Promotes a healthy nervous system and eyes
- Aids in the regulation of the immune system and antioxidant function
- Helps regulate minerals within the body's cells (such as calcium)
Can Boost Exercise and Endurance
There have been animal studies that have shown Taurine causes muscle's to work harder, for longer periods of time.
These same test also showed that taurine may increase the muscle's ability to contract and produce force.
Due from these abilities, runners and cyclists who have taken taurine in supplement form have been able to cover longer distances with less fatigue.
Taurine is widely used in bodybuilding supplements because it is known to reduce muscle damage and cause less muscle soreness.
Although, taurine is usually used by athletes and bodybuilders, it can also support weight loss.
Taurine may increase the body's use of fat for fuel, thus increasing the fat burning process.
Other known beneficial qualities from taking taurine supplements include;
- Promotes healthy eyesight
- Reduce ringing in the ears for those suffering from hearing loss
- May reduce seizures and help treat epilepsy
- Protect liver cells from free radical & toxin damage
#5
Creatine Monohydrate
Improves Exercise Performance
Creatine Monohydrate is a chemical found in the body's brain and muscle's.
If you wanted to increase creatine the natural way, it is found in foods such as red meat and seafood.
Including more creatine in the diet can provide many benefits, but most commonly it's used by athletes and bodybuilders.
Creating can improve exercise performance and increase muscle mass.
The creatine ingredient is found in nutritional supplements for bodybuilders and professional athletes and is allowed by the International Olympic Committee, (NCCA) and other professional sports.
Studies have shown creatine monohydrate is the most effective for muscle gain.
It can increase strength during intense workout training, along with power, and muscle mass.
There are many forms of creatine including liquid and ethyl ester, but creatine monohydrate is more effective than the other forms.
Most of the time, creatine monohydrate is found in multi-ingredient supplements, such as pre-workout supplements for men.
Other benefits of creatine monohydrate include helping to treat creatine deficiency syndromes.
Creatine deficiency can affect:
- The brain
- Aging
- Bone density
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Congestive heart failure
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Exercise tolerance
- Fibromyalgia
- Huntington's disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscle atrophy
- Muscle cramps
- Breathing problems in infants when sleeping
- Head trauma
- Recovery from surgery
As you can see, Creatine has many uses and has more scientific support than other ingredients and is widely available and costs less.

Co Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Boosts Energy & Stamina
Co Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is a substance concentrated in the mitochondria of cells, also found in the membrane of cells.
Without going too far in depth, lets just say these particular cells are the power house of cells. They produce most adenosine triphosphate from carbs and fats.
Muscle cells rely on adenosine triphosphate (ATP), to function. CpQ10 is naturally produced by the body, but as you get older, the body produces less.
For bodybuilders, professional trainers, and people who do intense workouts, their bodies will utilize more CoQ10. This is why it is commonly found in nutrition supplements for bodybuilders and athletes.
Intense exercise causes an increase in the metabolic rate which will increase the amount of CoQ10 the body utilizes.
There have been many studies on CoQ10 and its effects on the body, and have shown its ability to enhance exercise performance.
It is even known to protect against muscle damage from intense workout training.
There are many other benefits from the supplementation of Co Enzyme Q10, including;
- Improving cardiovascular function
- Boosting energy and stamina
- Supporting cognitive function
- Fights free radical damage
Other Benefits include:
- Anti-aging effects
- Supports healthy vision and hearing
- Promotes oral health
- Powerful antioxidant properties
- Decrease Cardiovascular Disease
- Enhances the immune system
- May help keep cancer from developing
- May help protect against disorders such as;
- Alzheimer's disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Huntington's disease
Including CoQ10 in pre-workout supplements for men and women, such as those from BlackWolf:
Pre-workout (Track, for him or Trail, for her)
Intra-workout (hunt)
&
Post-workout (eliminate),
Blackwolf all-in-one supplement packs,
can help speed up muscle recovery and help with muscle and strength gains.

A few Other Popular Ingredients
A few other popular ingredients found in pre-workout supplements for men and women are;
- Zinc Citrate Powder – Known to help promote a healthy neurological a reproductive function.
- Zinc also plays an important role in protein synthesis, tissue formation, and wound healing.
- Whey Protein Isolate – Whey protein contains 9 essential amino acids, including extra Leucine, which stimulates muscle protein synthesis and helps build more muscle mass.
- Vitamin B5 (Calcium D-Pantothenate) – Improves stamina, increases energy, and helps the brain and neurological systems function faster.
Although there are many others, I think I've covered some of the most popular or most commonly found ingredients in bodybuilding supplements.
Author's Note
I hope this article was helpful and informative enough for you to have a better understanding about the popular ingredients found in Pre-Workout Supplements for Men and Women.
I'm not a bodybuilder or professional athlete, but I thoroughly researched these ingredients and learned a lot.
Of course, keep in mind, you should always discuss new supplements with your doctor before taking them.
If you are a bodybuilder or athlete and take supplements that include some of these ingredients, I would appreciate any information you have about them based on your own experiences.

Super nice article, very well documented! Thanks for doing the research work on this.
I got a bit fooled by the site name, as I am thin and I’m trying to put mass on, not get rid of it 🙂 This sounds quite useful, so I am keeping this page handy.
I will most likely start testing a creatine monohydrate supplement.
