Acupuncture may reduce use of opioids post-surgery

One study presented to the American Society of Anesthesiologists reports that having acupuncture before surgery may lower the rate of dependence on opioids after surgical procedures. Study participants who did not receive acupuncture on average took 3 times as much morphine in the 24 hour period post surgery than participants who received acupuncture beforehand. If you’ve got surgery on the horizon, acupuncture may be the way to go because 6% of patients will become dependent on opioids prescribed for surgical recovery. https://www.asahq.org/about-asa/newsroom/news-releases/2020/10/acupuncture-before-surgery-means-less-pain-significantly-fewer-opioids-for-veterans
