Healthy Holidays

As families begin to make plans for the holidays, many find themselves wondering how they’ll navigate holiday feasts while still honoring their lifestyle changes and health journey. Big family meals don’t have to be a dieter’s nightmare or a minefield of temptation. Here’s our top tips for healthy holidays to help you get through the season!

  1. Don’t skip meals!

Skipping meals leading up to a holiday feast can lead to overindulgence and overeating due to hunger pangs and appetite. By snacking healthy beforehand, you can still partake of a family meal while maintaining portion control.

  1. Healthy Options

Ensure that healthy and nutritional options are available, plan your recipes and swap traditional ingredients for healthier ones.

  1. Color

Color your plate with loads of veggies and fruits. Aim to cover half your plate with these foods to fill up on before going at the stuffing.

  1. Treat yourself

Indulging in a slice of pie won’t break your diet. Be mindful and savor that dessert. Eat is slowly and enjoy it!

  1. Satisfied, not stuffed

Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. Say no to your auntie that insists on second or third helpings.

  1. Guilt-free

If you do overindulge, don’t guilt or shame yourself. Get back on the healthy horse and get back on track.

  1. Drink smart

Festive holiday drinks, particularly alcoholic ones, are loaded with empty calories. Instead, opt for water, tea or coffee. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation and alternate water with drinks.

  1. Keep the routine

It’s fine to take a few days off with family visiting but stick as close as you can to your workout and diet routine. Invite family on your after-dinner walk or start a new tradition of flag-football after dinner! On December 26th, get back into the gym!

As we head into the holiday season, be mindful and be merry!
